# AI usage and limits

> Every AI feature uses usage units from two allowances: one per session, one per week. Here is how both work.

Everything Clamly AI does uses **usage units**. You spend them from two allowances at the same time, and you can keep using AI while you have room in both.

## Your allowances

**The session allowance** starts with your first AI request and refills **5 hours** later, whether or not you used all of it.

**The weekly allowance** starts with your first AI request of the week and resets **7 days** later.

  A session is not the same as being signed in. Closing Clamly or signing out does not end it or refill it. Only the 5 hours do.

## What each feature uses

So on Free, one session covers about five generated quizzes, or a long evening of chat messages.

If a request fails partway, the units it reserved are given back automatically.

## See how much you have left

* **Starter and Pro:** the lightning meter in the header shows how much of your session allowance you have used, and says **Cooldown** while it refills. The **Billing** page shows both allowances, with a countdown to the next refill.
* **Free:** there is no meter. Clamly tells you when you reach a limit.

## When you reach a limit

You will see one of these messages. None of them affects anything that is not AI: quizzes, flashcards, notes and everything else keep working.

    Your weekly allowance is used up. It resets 7 days after your first AI request of the week. Session refills do not add to it.
